John Hanson Project Bio

JHP’s debut album is titled Go On. At the self-hosted album release party, 1/12/2019, the energy of what JHP represents was felt. The sold-out audience (150+) heard JHP jam through a short acoustic set and a full out rock set for over an hour and 15 minutes of rock celebration and shared enthusiasm on the stage and on the dance floor. It was their best show to date, and just the start for this new band. Recently featured on WERS 88.9 FM, John Hanson Project is currently booking their spring tour, and has some key dates already lined up to further promote the release of the new album. Since it’s release just 12 days ago, 100 physical copies of the album have been sold, and the tracks have been streamed over 6,000 times on Spotify and other streaming sites.

‘Go On’ is rock that proves to be both ambitious and accessible. Versatile songwriting with the consistency of a melodic, familiar feeling through the blaring distorted power of “Trenches” to the acoustic “Sailing the Drift,” the poppy “Get Over It,” or the brooding “Broken Man,” the music has drawn comparisons to artists like REM, Arctic Monkeys, Foo Fighters, and Elliot Smith. John Hanson's voice and guitar lead the way with mixtures of acoustic and electric guitar, piano, synthesizer and horns built on the foundation of bass and drums. John has been cutting his teeth with his live band in Boston and Providence and they have built a small but very loyal following. John Hanson Project, coined JHP, is positioned to have a productive 2019 promoting the album.

After about six months crafting demos of the chosen songs at the JHP home studio, Go On was recorded at Mad Oak Studios in Allston MA, with parts from the original demos included. Producer Benny Grotto, who has won the prestigious Boston Music Award for producer of the year, joining him for the process were: Mike Levesque (Session Drummer, David Bowie, Natalie Imbruglia), Sean McLauglin (Session Bassist, owner of 38’ Studios in Boston), Dom Tenaglia (engineer at Mad Oak, Session Guitarist, Berklee College student).

JHP are hosting their own album release party on 1/12/2019 at the Walpole Italian American Club for those who are local. Tickets are for sale here :

John Hanson has humble beginnings. An eager music fanatic who began to pen songs and soon after set about recording them on his Dad’s old 4 track tape machine. This type of activity continued, although the technology changed from a digital 8 track to the limitless Pro Tools/DAW. At this point he has been writing and recording for over 17 years. Accumulating expertise over time, John is releasing his highly anticipated debut studio album at the age of 33.

For some more history, John began hosting open mic's regularly at the age of 19 and began playing covers and originals at local bars. This lead to the formation of the rock band OFFBEAT MOTIF in 2012 who played in the Boston Music scene at clubs including the legendary Middle East, Thunder Road, Hard Rock Cafe, Copperfield's, PA's Lounge and Sally O'Brien's. The band released a self-titled EP in 2015 and was the "Home Brewed feature artist" on WBRU 95.5 FM, a premier alternative rock station in Providence RI. With radio play on multiple FM stations, online features, and print press, and hundreds of physical sales, the album was a local success.

John has released over 80 songs online on Soundcloud and Bandcamp. He estimates that he's written over 2,000 songs. He records the demos at his home studio, playing the bass, drums and keyboard, and through this practice became well versed in the recording process. After a decade or so of self-taught music production, he earned a Certificate in Audio Engineering and Music Production from the Recording Connection Institute in LA. The certificate was gained with a 6 month apprenticeship at Plaid Dog Studios in Allston. John has gained additional experience acting as the current music manager at The Ravens Nest in Walpole MA, touring and recording an album with The Daybreakers Band (as an official band member for two years), opening for The Beach Boys and Three Dog Night, producing an album for M. Curly

The release of John Hanson's first professional album next year is sure to put this local talent on a larger map. His drive and musical prowess compliment an original voice. Stay tuned to this artist as he continues to grow, you will be glad you did.
